About
Background on this resource and its scope.
What This Site Covers
CedarBasket.eu documents traditional hand-woven basket types used in rural households in Poland. The focus is on shape classification, weaving materials, and storage applications — three areas where regional variation is most clearly observable.
The content draws on publicly available ethnographic literature, museum documentation, and regional craft records. It does not represent a commercial enterprise or promote any products or workshops.
Scope and Approach
Coverage concentrates on basket types that were in common household use during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Polish rural regions, including Mazovia, Lesser Poland, Podlasie, Kurpie, Warmia, and Silesia. These regions show distinct material preferences shaped by local plant availability and seasonal patterns.
Articles describe documented practices. Where precise figures are unavailable from public sources, neutral descriptive language is used instead of estimates.
